Repeat Prescriptions Policy
Making an appointment with your doctor is the best way to obtain a repeat prescription, as it allows your doctor to review your ongoing medication needs. Providing repeat prescriptions without an appointment is at the discretion of your doctor.
Please note:
- Repeat prescriptions are only available for patients who are registered and enrolled with our practice.
- They are generally issued for medications that have been prescribed for long-term use.
- Some medications, such as antibiotics, always require an appointment.
To ensure continuity of care:
- Your usual doctor is responsible for reviewing and authorising your repeat prescription.
- If your regular doctor is unavailable (e.g. on leave or unwell), another clinician may review your request. Approval remains at the discretion of the reviewing clinician.
Your doctor may decline a repeat prescription if it is not clinically appropriate. If this occurs:
- The reason will be explained to you and documented.
- You may be asked to book an appointment for further assessment (standard consultation fees apply).
Prescription duration:
From February 2026, prescriptions may be issued for a maximum of 12 months, in line with current legislation. Prescribers should consider a 12-month prescriptions only when:
- The medicine is stable and low risk
- The patient’s condition is well controlled
- Monitoring requirements are minimal and predictable
- No significant dose adjustments are expected
- The patient is reliable with follow up and medication use
Processing times:
- Standard requests: up to 48 hours (excluding weekends and public holidays)
- Urgent requests: within 24 hours (subject to doctor’s approval and an additional $10 fee)
If your doctor can issue a repeat prescription without an appointment, you will be notified by phone or email once it is ready, or if further information is required.
If you have not heard from us within 48 hours, please contact reception on 09 837 1110 to confirm the status of your request.
